Background:
I quickly establish my background for the painting. Indications of the sky & floor help dictate my general perspective & mood for the painting.

Layout & Sketch:
With my background indicated, I loosely sketch in the tank design. I know I want to include a figure appearing out of the hatch, so I'm sure to indicate that even in this loose stage.

Block-out:
With the sketch outlined, I then block-out the main components of my design, as well as the general color palette/tone for the overall tank. I still kept it loose so I wouldn't get attached to any one area if I wanted to change it later.

Final:
Since I had my overall design laid out, I was able to clean up and refine my painting by separating forms & adding the necessary detail. I wanted this painting to have a painterly style, so I kept a lot of my initial brush strokes visible.
